Astrophil and Stella(Sir Philip Sydney)
Penelope Devereux(Lady RichCountess of Devonshire )
Sonnet
sequence
l A sonnet sequence is a group of sonnets thematically unified to create a long work.
l The subject is usually the speaker's unhappy love for a distant beloved, following the courtly love tradition of the troubadours, from whom the genre ultimately derived.
l "troubadours": 11-13 centuries minstrel on the French-Italian borders.
l The sonnet sequence was a very popular genre during the Renaissance, following the pattern of Petrarch.
Petrarchan sonnet conventions
l Many sonnet sequences pretend to be autobiographical.
l The genre was a very stylized one.
l Most sonnet sequences are better approached as attempts to create an erotic persona in which wit and originality plays with the artificiality of the genre.
l One could regard the emotions evoked to be as artificial as the conventions with which they are presented.
l Poets in this tradition undertook to produce an anatomy of love, displaying its shifting and often contradictorystates:
l hope and despair, tenderness and bitterness, exultation and modesty, bodily desire and spiritual transcendence.
Conventions
l Praising the beauty of the lady
l Addressing the moon
l Appealing to the world of sleep and dream
l Bemoaning the lady's absence
l Reprimanding her cold chastity
l Expressing his frustrated longing
Courtly love
l Courtly love was an experience between erotic and spiritual attainment that seems contradictory, "a love at once illicit and morally elevating, passionate and disciplined, humiliating and exalting, human and transcendent"
Neoplatonism
l Although the founder of Neoplatonism is supposed to have been Ammonius Saccas the Enneads of his pupil Plotinus are the primary and classical document of Neoplatonism.
l As a form of mysticism, it contains theoretical and practical parts, the first dealing with the high origin of the human soul showing how it has departed from its first estate, and the second showing the way by which the soul may again return to the Eternal and Supreme.
l The system can be divided between the invisible world and the phenomenal world, the former containing the transcendent One from which emanates an eternal perfect, essence (nous), which, in turn, produces the world-soul.
下面現在看來其實有點不知道是在什麼,我想應該是當時上課十個篇章自己所認為的大意吧
